A Quick History of Windham

Windham was incorporated in 1692, and it quickly took advantage of the Willimantic River as a source of waterpower for saw and gristmills. In later years, the town was dominated by the thread and textile industries.

Historic Districts and Landmarks

Willimantic's Prospect Hill Historic District, one of the largest historic districts in Connecticut, is known for its well-preserved Victorian homes, old schoolhouses, and vintage buildings. Every year, the Willimantic Victorian Neighborhood Association hosts tours of local homes as part of its Victorian Days event.

Other historic points of interest in Windham include Eastern Connecticut State University (established in 1889), ACT Performing Arts Magnet High School (located in the 20th-century Capitol Theater), and the Windham Textile & History Museum (located in the former American Thread Company factory complex, which was built in the 1850s).
